“Soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska is especially impressive, bringing a darkly colored, intimate tone to the ‘Crucifixus’ and expansive phrasing and concentrated musicality to the ‘O Salutaris Hostia’ (a hymn text interpolated by Rossini, functioning here as a radiant, glorious pause before the somber ‘Agnus Dei’). Pendatchanska is an arresting voice and mezzo-soprano Manuela Custer works hard to keep up in the ‘Qui tollis’ duet, although their darkly colored timbres blend beautifully.”
